On 12 and 27 June 2025, our Diploma in Optometry (DOPT) students partnered with HOYA Singapore for the second time, expanding their outreach from one children鈥檚 home last year to two this year: Pertapis Centre and Marymount Centre Ahuva Good Shepherd Children鈥檚 Home.
This meaningful initiative aimed to provide free paediatric eye care to children who may be experiencing visual challenges such as myopia or astigmatism. Our students conducted comprehensive eye examinations to detect refractive errors, with HOYA stepping in to provide prescription spectacles where needed.
The students鈥 professionalism and compassion shone through, earning positive feedback from both homes. Their commitment to child welfare and eagerness to apply their clinical skills in real-world settings were evident throughout the collaboration.
Beyond the clinical impact, the experience fostered a deeper sense of social responsibility and community service among the students. It also raised awareness about the importance of early eye care鈥攅specially for children who may not have regular access to such services.
鈥淭he vision screening was a rewarding experience that allowed me to deliver essential eye care to children, while also developing my leadership skills and collaborating closely with my peers.鈥
