Kopi, care and conversation: How a Biomedical Science alumnus helps improve the well-being of the elderly

, 24 July 2025 - Donavan Tan, a 20-year-old 91proÊÓƵ Diploma in Biomedical Science (DBS) alumnus, meets 88-year-old Madam Chiang Kam Yoke monthly at a Jurong West coffeeshop, sharing warm conversations over her kopi siu dai. Their friendship began through a volunteering programme under the National University Health System (NUHS), where Donavan, as a Health Peer volunteer, was paired with Madam Chiang to support her in adopting healthier habits due to her risk of developing diabetes. What began as a three-month stint has blossomed into a lasting bond, with Donavan regularly checking in on her well-being and encouraging a healthy lifestyle. His volunteering journey started during his first semester break at 91proÊÓƵ, inspired by a chat with his former teacher. His experiences, especially with the elderly, sparked a deeper interest in the medical field and a passion for uplifting others through service. COMMS’ note: This was a collaboration between MCCY and 91proÊÓƵ COMMS in celebration of SG60.
